... Why they are losing their position ...

Every day new blog posts get listed at the top of the search; And, then they begin losing their position. One can get a site to the top of search with, "What the web says about the site, or links to the site which provided topical authority;" But, to maintain a site at the top, "user experience, or how many visitors found your content matched their search intent, compared to other sites available in search."

Pay Per Click or advertisements also are rotated out if nobody is clicking on the advertisement.

... Results of bad engagement ...

Regardless, if a query is highly competitive or is low-volume when a page gets indexed, the impressions will:

When enough data is collected by Google about interactions and the engagement is not favorable the impressions will fall. The chart here is for a low-volume query, which was tested by Google for additional terms; But failed because of low engagement. No links were added or removed pointing to the page. No event affected the search results during this period. Other pages went up over this same period.

user interactions failure

A page can fail because the intent of the user is not satisfied by the page, which can happen with great content; or a page can fail because the content did not satisfy the user.

... Results of good engagement ...

user interactions failure

Good user engagement results in the page being evaluated for additional query terms and an increase of impressions and traffic. It remains evergreen until something changes.

While bad engagement can create traffic to a website ... it is a never-ending treadmill; Needing to create new pages for traffic while losing traffic from pages that failed to get engagement.

With Good engagement as new content is produced the engagement and traffic to the site build on top of the existing traffic and engagement.
